Happy Halloween

I managed to get through another Halloween unscathed. It’s my least-favorite holiday. I’ve never liked it, even (especially) as a child. I’ve always been rather shy among people I don’t know. Dressing up and ringing random doorbells to beg for candy has never appealed to me. Besides, I don’t like most candy.

No Candy sign I made this sign and posted it on the window next to my front door but I don’t think it really mattered. As far as I can tell, nobody came up to my building. There are only three apartments up here anyway. I peeked out a couple of times and couldn’t see anyone trick-or-treating in the neighboring building either. Perhaps the kids know to stick with the big, fancy houses with elaborate decorations and the shop owners downstairs.

I thought it was pretty disturbing how many older kids there were roaming the streets with no costume at all. I wonder how well they did. If I was handing out candy, I wouldn’t give it to those kids. I’d probably wake up to find my house covered in eggs and toilet paper.

Next year I may follow through on my threat to hand out money-saving coupons from the all-too-annoying ShopWise catalogs. What kid wouldn’t want to save 50 cents on toothpaste?

  1. I had the same experience this year - no kids at all were trick-or-treating in our apartment complex. It’s a shame too, since that’s usually a great opportunity to get rid of the crappy candy (Smarties, Laffy Taffy, etc.) we get at the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. While Disney did up the ante this year by giving out some decent Hershey’s products (mmm, Krackels) in addition to the M&M/Mars and Nestle standbys, they also were giving out stuff like little candy hot dogs and bags of raisins, so we had to do some sorting when we got home. After getting a 50 cent toothpaste coupon, most kids would probably be beside themselves with joy if he got raisins too.
