Delete extra channels from MythTV
November 12, 2006 on 6:40 pm | In General Nonsense | Write a CommentI’ve been hunting around for a quick way to delete all the channels in my MythTV DVR that I don’t get with DirectTV. I went to Zap2It’s interface and removed them all, but all that did on my end was give me a lot of “Unknown” in the program directory. I set out to write a query.
There was some old, outdated info in a FAQ somewhere that didn’t really help much. Also, MySQL won’t let you SELECT from the same table you’re doing a DELETE. So I had to use a temporary table and do it in two steps:
CREATE TEMPORARY TABLE tmptable SELECT c.chanid
FROM channel c
LEFT JOIN program p ON c.chanid = p.chanid
WHERE p.chanid IS NULL ;
DELETE channel
FROM channel
INNER JOIN tmptable ON channel.chanid = tmptable.chanid;
Hope this helps someone.
Happy Halloween
November 1, 2006 on 9:12 am | In General Nonsense | 1 CommentI managed to get through another Halloween unscathed. It’s my least-favorite holiday. I’ve never liked it, even (especially) as a child. I’ve always been rather shy among people I don’t know. Dressing up and ringing random doorbells to beg for candy has never appealed to me. Besides, I don’t like most candy.
I made this sign and posted it on the window next to my front door but I don’t think it really mattered. As far as I can tell, nobody came up to my building. There are only three apartments up here anyway. I peeked out a couple of times and couldn’t see anyone trick-or-treating in the neighboring building either. Perhaps the kids know to stick with the big, fancy houses with elaborate decorations and the shop owners downstairs.
I thought it was pretty disturbing how many older kids there were roaming the streets with no costume at all. I wonder how well they did. If I was handing out candy, I wouldn’t give it to those kids. I’d probably wake up to find my house covered in eggs and toilet paper.
Next year I may follow through on my threat to hand out money-saving coupons from the all-too-annoying ShopWise catalogs. What kid wouldn’t want to save 50 cents on toothpaste?
