Get a second opinion

October 21, 2006 on 7:37 pm | In General Nonsense |

I recently joined the Osceola Freecycle group and have been enjoying the requests and offers that people have been posting. Someone recently gave away a 42DD bra, for instance.

Today someone posts that she wants a chihuahua puppy. She describes why, and I’m totally lost here:

About a year ago my female chihuahua passed away when going to the vet
to get her yearly shots. Apparently like the vet said she was too old she was over 10 years old and the shots could not be givin to her. So my dog had to be put to sleep or just like her live with out shot and be sick its just the same feeling when you lose a family member I spent 2 months thinking about my lost my husband cried like if it was his child. I am now starting fresh because I know she is in heaven looking down on me. I am looking for some one who is a breeds or someone who owns chihuahua’s puppys and has a kind and big heart and willing to give it to be part of my family. Thank you and God Bless !

If I understand this correctly, her dog was 10 years old and otherwise healthy. She took her to the vet for an annual exam and vax.

  • The vet told her the dog was too old to be vaccinated.

I don’t buy that, but the next part is what really throws me (and I’ll translate):

  • The vet recommended the dog be put down or live without shots and be sick.

What?! I can’t believe a doctor, sworn to do no harm, would recommend euthanasia for an otherwise healthy animal simply because it was “too old” for vaccinations! Who would give such advice?

My dog Tekey just turned fourteen years old. She’s allergic to one of the vaccinations
(don’t know which one) so we stopped giving them to her about 11 years ago. She has never had parvo, rabies, or any other communicable disease. And as far as her being “too old” for vax: every time we see a vet I have to explain why they can’t give her a shot.

Tekey is in rather good shape for her age. She still bounces and plays and spins 360s when she’s excited. She climbs up and down the stairs seemingly for fun. Sometimes when we’re out for our walk, she encourages me to run, pulling me all the way!

When was the last time YOU had a vaccination? My last booster was in 1995. I hope my doctor doesn’t recommend that I be put down.

  1. I don’t get it either - that seems to be to be totally inappropriate and totally unnecessary. 10 years old is *not* that old for either docs or cats. Fortunately, our vet is wonderful, and still gives great care to our cats, even though one did her best to inflict serious bodily injury on him when she got her shots a few months ago. It took the vet and two assistants to subdue Red, but they did manage give her the shots, and at no time did anyone even express mild frustration at Red’s behavior.

Lesson to be learned - you can get second opinions when it comes to your vet too.

  2. I hope there’s more to the story… like the dog was already ill or had something else wrong. I am tempted to email the girl to ask but I’m afraid it would be inappropriate behavior.

  3. Did she offer to pay for the new dog? perhaps she is telling some bogus sob story so someone will give her a new chihuahua…

  4. It’s FREEcycle. (freecycle.org sign up in your area(s)) So yeah, she’s hoping for a free puppy.

Chihuahua puppies sell for $400-600. I doubt she’s going to score, even with the sad story.

  5. After losing his medical license and while doing his time in the big house, Jack Kevorkain completed an online course and is now practicing veterinary medicine. He probably thought the dog looked terminally ill (I think all Chihuahua’s look that way, anyway) and misinterpreted the little fella’s whining as a request to be put out of his misery.
