Perfect Day

February 24, 2006 on 12:20 pm | In General Nonsense | Comments Off

Did you ever have one of those days where everything went right? Where the sky seemed a little bit more blue; every song that came on the radio was great (and there are no commercials ;-) I love XM)? Wednesday was that day.

I had been up really late migrating data to my new Mac Mini and shutting down extra PCs. I went to sleep around 04:30. At 8am I got a call from Leslie telling me I was hired and I had to come in to fill out some paperwork. Yes!

I called Scheduling to make arrangements at Disney and ask a few questions (I will be CR in Monorails as of Monday, March 5.) and gave Leslie a start date then scrambled to get ready. I drove to Tampa and back, took a drug test, and got to Chip & Dale with plenty of time to spare. That’s roughly when it hit me.

I put myself back together, went in to work and had the most amazing work day. Even Maribeth made it over to the Kingdom, she and I haven’t worked together in weeks.

I will be working on a 3-month contract for a company in Tampa doing PHP web software development for internal and external sites. It’s likely it will extend beyond that, I was told some contractors have been there over two years. I’ll still be at Disney on the weekends for fun and health benefits.

I’m so excited! Things finally seem to be turning around.

Presidential Visit

The President came to the Contemporary tonight to speak before a Republican fund raiser dinner. With the traffic on I-4 messed up already because it’s Race Week, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get through World Drive in time to get to work. When I got off the highway, I noticed I was making good time.

DisneyWorld appeared to be crawling with cops so I set my cruise control for 50. I made great time… there was no traffic! It was then I realized what was going on: I was just ahead of the motorcade. All of the roads leading to World Dr. were blocked off. I came to the Magic Kingdom toll plaza and nobody was working there, but a few motorcycle police were there waving frantically and yelling. “GO!”

I didn’t have a choice to turn into the parking lot, or at least it wasn’t obvious to me, so I kept going up towards Seven Seas. As I approached STOLport, I checked my mirrors and saw that about three cars back were the first motorcycle officers clearing the way. So he was like right behind me! Exciting.

Apple stole my identity!

February 17, 2006 on 4:01 am | In General Nonsense | 3 Comments

Ok not really, but it’s kinda creepy: Today I bought a Mac Mini at the Apple Store in the International Plaza Mall in Tampa. (woo, and got my 6% Disney discount way out there!). I used my Paypal card to get another 1.5% cash back, of course. This happens to be the same credit card I have on file with my Apple ID for iTunes purchases. When I got home tonight, I had an email from Apple telling me how excited they are that I bought a Mac.

I never told the sales associate Nathan who rang me up my email address. The only link is my Paypal MasterCard. That’s pretty damn sweet. Computers is like smart ‘n stuff. I bet the rest of you folks (my parents included) would be shaking in your boots if/when you experience something like that, eh?

Now that I think of it, my email address and telephone number are on my receipt too. Cool. Though I did purchase OS X 10.1 at this very store back in 2001. Maybe they asked for it then. *shrug*

Not enough hours

I keep telling myself that I haven’t written because I want the old computer story to get more exposure. That’s true, and it seems to be working. I’ve been promised 4-5 machines so far. (A couple of which are better than those I have here performing routine tasks :-) )

I suppose when I finish up what I’m working on for Gill Manufacturing I will make a page here for pledges, inventory, and requests. I’ve ordered a couple of large drives for myself and I’ll be setting up the distribution of Linux that I plan to install on the computers I give away.

Speaking of developing pages for proteinspill, more than a couple of people have reminded me that I need to put user forums here. Once I figure out how to integrate the userbase from Wordpress–so you don’t have to login twice–you’ll see the Forum tab appear at the top.
